This session will explore how we can use different techniques and skills to effectively communicate our opinions and thoughts. It will look at when this may be difficult and examine how to initiate an appropriate response to a variety of situations to promote a positive outcome for everyone involved.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the principles of effective communication and discuss what influences its success
- Discuss patient perceptions and how expectations have changed, consider the influence this has on episodes of care
- Discuss the patient consultation and review the importance of first impressions and the influence we have on outcome
- Be able to assess our own communication style and understand how this influences others
- Discuss the causes of communication ‘break down’ and explore emotions and appropriate solutions
- Explore some basic Conflict Resolution techniques that can help de-escalate a difficult situation, when dealing with a patient one-to-one and in isolation
- Identify other areas where confident communication is essential as a doctor to ensure patient safety and our own well-being
